LEGO Ideas 21330 Home Alone’s plane ticket is very meta

The newly-revealed LEGO Ideas 21330 Home Alone includes a subtle nod to Alex Storozhuk, the fan designer behind the original submission. Easter eggs and references to LEGO Ideas fan designers have been part of the platform's DNA since 2014, when 21109 Exo-Suit recreated Peter Reid and his then-fiancee Yvonne Doyle in minifigure form. 21325 Medieval Blacksmith, 21326 Winnie the Pooh and 21327 Typewriter have all continued that trend in 2021, and now 21330 Home Alone is following in the same footsteps. During a recent roundtable interview with Brick Fanatics and other LEGO Fan Media, the set's fan designer Alex Storozhuk, LEGO designer Antica Bracanav and graphic designer Kirsten Bay Nielsen discussed Alex's involvement in the design process, and how the design team included a subtle reference to the Ukrainian fan builder.

"When I found out that it was approved I wrote down all the important things I wanted to be included in the set - some ideas, propositions, and fun twists, and just sent it to Hasan [Jensen, LEGO Ideas Engagement Manager]," Alex explained. "I actually even made some small builds to explain what I was talking about.

"And then when I first met with the design team, I was super excited to see that almost everything from the list I made was implemented. But I honestly never asked if they actually read everything in that list!"

The obvious question to ask is: did Antica and fellow designer Enrique Belmonte Beixer see that list? "It was shared with us, but our list kind of matched Alex's list - there's nothing that we already didn't include," Antica said. "We did talk to him about other things that we would like to have in the model, so there were small Easter eggs that we added." While Alex hadn't actually built the set at the time of our interview - his copies had only just turned up that very same day - the team had informed him of at least one of those Easter eggs. "I know that there's a sticker included with my [LEGO Ideas username], adwind," the fan designer said. "I really appreciate it - I'm flattered to have my own piece now!"

Thankfully, Kirsten - who was responsible for designing both the set's minifigures and stickers - was able to clarify exactly where Alex's username shows up. "I don't want to spoil it since you haven't built it yet," she said (before immediately spoiling it), "but your nickname is actually on Kevin's plane ticket.

It's called Adwind Airlines." 21330 Home Alone will be available to purchase from November 1 for GBP229.99 / £249.99 / EUR249.99. Check out our in-depth review for more on the latest LEGO Ideas set.
