Best LOTR Lego Sets

Lego is an exceedingly popular franchise, and Lord of the Rings even more so. The first batch of Lord of the Rings Lego sets came in 2012 and were available until about 2015, before unfortunately being discontinued. This left many fans, possibly many of you, desiring more.

It built upon the first iterations of the Lord of the Rings Lego universe and became something truly stunning. Here are the highlights of the LOTR Lego sets, both old and new.

10 Shelob Attacks

Shelob Attacks is probably the most unique early Lego set. Not only are all the minifigures unique to this set, but it’s the only one in which Shelob makes a direct appearance – she isn’t even referenced in other sets.

Shelob is rightfully horrifying here, with eight posable legs and silk she can wrap people up in. Frodo on the other hand, is rightfully horrified (and poisoned). The only actual set piece in this Lego set, however, is the outcropping that Gollum can hide out in.

9 The Battle Of Helm’s Deep

Although this Lego set may be big, the back side leaves much to be desired.

From the front, it is exceptionally impressive, especially for the early Lord of the Rings Lego sets. But when viewed from the back, there is no detail nor areas to be explored. It leaves the set feeling hollow and woefully devoid of the action out front.

Despite the lack of detail in the back, though, one could easily recreate the Battle of Helms Deep with some extra minifigures, possibly from some of the other sets.

8 The Council Of Elrond

This Lego set might be small, but it is uniquely pretty. If you don’t have the space for a large set, this is a nice alternative. It’s small enough that it won’t take up much room on your shelf while still representing your love of Lord of the Rings.

Related: Lord Of The Rings: History Of The Elves There are three unique minifigures that fans of the books and the movies can enjoy. The only downside of this set is that, thanks to its small size, it isn’t that detailed.

7 The Orc Forge

If you’re a fan of Orcs, then the Orc Forge Lego set is a must-have.

This set features Boromir’s murderer and leader of the Uruk-hai scouts, Lurtz. He makes his only appearance here, granting the Orc Forge a special connection to the Fellowship of the Ring movie. The Lego set itself seems like it would be fun to play around in, with moving parts and a unique smithery to arm your Uruk-hai army with.

It may be small in size, but it’s certainly one of the better-looking old Lord of the Rings Lego sets.

6 Attack On Weathertop

The Attack on Weathertop Lego set is one of the only ones to feature Ringwraiths. This fact, in itself, is compelling enough to put it on the list. They are possibly one of the most recognizable enemies in the entire Lord of the Rings franchise, despite being, quite literally, faceless.

Paired alongside Frodo, Merry, and Aragorn, you can fend off the Ringwraiths and explore the interior of Weathertop. At first glance, it doesn’t look like this set has anything to hide, but this set is prime for some (brief) exploration.

5 The Mines Of Moria

The Mines of Moria are one of the most famous settings in Lord of the Rings. While Gandalf doesn’t make an appearance in this Lego set, Pippin does, alongside Legolas, Boromir, and Gimli.

With these four (mostly without Pippin’s aid), you can fend off the Cave Troll, Orcs of Moria, and Skeletons. You won’t be a fool of a Took if you can manage to get your hands on this set. The only downside is that there is no solid base, which means the pieces are unconnected and can easily be lost.

4 Battle At The Black Gate

One of the best things about the Battle at the Black Gate Lego set is its minifigures.

The coolest one out of the five probably being the Mouth of Sauron. Per usual, Lego excels at making an interactive set. Unlike most of the other Lord of the Rings Lego sets, this one is best served as a play piece.

Related: Lord Of The Rings: Who Is Sauron? Comparatively, it isn’t nearly as striking as some of the other options on this list. Regardless, it ranks higher because of the unique minifigures, attention to detail, and the value it does offer as a play-focused set.

3 Pirate Ship Ambush

The Pirate Ship Ambush Lego set is perfect for any diehard Lord of the Rings fan.

This set is modeled after the Corsairs ship from Return of the King, seen only briefly in both the standard and the extended editions of the movies. For casual fans of the films and even the books, this Lego set might not be as meaningful. However, you can still appreciate the detailed work, the special minifigures, and the useable catapult.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan or not, you still have to admit it’s a pretty cool piece.

2 Tower Of Orthanc

The only tower that both Tolkien and the films agreed on as one of the Two Towers, the Tower of Orthanc finds its place in Lego history. Although this piece may initially appear unimpressive, the backside reveals multiple layers and detailed rooms. This is a piece that is made for 360 display and interaction.

Here you can relive the meeting of Saruman and Gandalf, with Gandalf’s eventual imprisonment and rescue. Of the older Lord of the Rings Lego sets, it remains one of the most impressive freestanding pieces.

1 Rivendell

Lord of the Rings: Rivendell, Lego

To put it simply, the Lego Rivendell set is stunning. It is by far the best-looking and most detailed set on this list, not to mention the biggest.

It has been the perfect way to revive the presence of Lord of the Rings in Lego form. With over 6,000 pieces and 15 unique minifigures, this set offers hours of fun assembly. The Lego Rivendell set isn’t for children, and Lego makes that clear, having marked the set as 18+.

The size and complexity work well to appeal to its older target audience.
