10 wild predictions for 10 more years of LEGO Star Wars sets

The LEGO Group has apparently extended its Star Wars contract for another decade, so here are 10 wild predictions for what the next 10 years could bring. Across the first two decades-and-change of the LEGO Star Wars theme, the LEGO Group has continually surprised, impressed and (inevitably) disappointed with its output to varying degrees. And according to fresh rumours, we’ve got at least another decade of that roller coaster of emotions to look forward to, as the LEGO Group has apparently renegotiated its contract with Disney to run until 2032.

Whatever your opinion on the LEGO Star Wars theme, it’s hard to say it’s ever been completely predictable – but that isn’t going to stop us making some wild guesses (and a few educated ones) about what that next decade could have in store for us. We’ve also rated each of these predictions for how likely it is to really happen, just so we can look back in 10 years and truly see how right or wrong we got it.

10 – A 10,000-piece and £1,000 set

The LEGO Group has made a habit of smashing records lately, continually raising the bar for its biggest and most expensive sets across not just Star Wars, but its entire portfolio. With another decade of LEGO Star Wars sets to come, there’s no reason to think it won’t continue to keep pushing those boundaries, and that means we’re surely on course for products that break the 10,000-piece and £1,000 barriers.

Whether a single set breezes past both of those in one go is less certain, but it feels like the kind of thing a new and improved Death Star could warrant, to throw out one example… Probability rating: 9/10

9 – At least one sequel trilogy set

Remember the Star Wars sequel trilogy? The LEGO Group is clearly doing its best to forget The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, because beyond 75257 Millennium Falcon – a set originally released alongside Episode IX – and a couple of Brick Sketches, there are currently no sequel trilogy-inspired sets available at LEGO.com.

All focus is now on the first six movies and the TV shows, including The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and The Bad Batch – but maybe, just maybe, 10 years is long enough for the sequel trilogy to get its own crowd of nostalgic fans clamouring for sets? Nah, probably not. Probability rating: 2/10

8 – A huge new Ewok Village

10 wild predictions for 10 more years of LEGO Star Wars sets

There’s a fair chance that this year’s rumoured £530 LEGO Star Wars set is a Master Builder Series take on Endor, but if it isn’t happening in 2022, then surely next year is the time to deliver: 2023 marks not only the 10th anniversary of the last big Endor set in 10236 Ewok Village, but also the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi.

And we all know how much the LEGO Group loves anniversaries. We’ve titled this list ‘wild predictions’, but this feels like the safest bet of them all. (Apart from number one, perhaps, as you’ll come to see.) Probability rating: 10/10

7 – Force Ghost minifigures, at last

10 wild predictions for 10 more years of LEGO Star Wars sets

Now that the LEGO Star Wars team has seen (and praised) the fake Force Ghost piece that was doing the rounds earlier this year, it’s presumably only a matter of time before it adopts a similar solution in official sets.

Okay, fingers crossed it doesn’t actually go down that route, but the story has only amplified the community’s desire for Force Ghost minifigures in some capacity. We’ve already come through two-plus decades without the LEGO Group finding a solution it’s happy with, but hey, who knows what the next 10 years could bring. Honestly, we’d be content with something like Moaning Myrtle from LEGO Harry Potter – but we’re not holding our breath.

Probability rating: 3/10

6 – The return of May the Fourth minifigure promos

  • 10 wild predictions for 10 more years of LEGO Star Wars sets

According to initial rumours surrounding the specifics of the LEGO Group’s contract extension, the renegotiated Star Wars agreement still doesn’t allow the company to produce a Collectible Minifigures series based on characters from a galaxy far, far away. That’s disappointing – although not entirely unexpected – but if we’re lucky, the LEGO Group might resurrect another dormant format for bringing us obscure minifigures that wouldn’t otherwise turn up in sets. We’re talking about May the Fourth promos, of course, which for the past few years have arrived in the form of buildable microscale vignettes.

A return to minifigure polybags would be very welcome at this stage, and soften the blow of another decade without a LEGO Star Wars Collectible Minifigures series. Probability rating: 4/10

5 – Phase II Commander Cody

10 wild predictions for 10 more years of LEGO Star Wars sets

Probably the most-wanted minifigure of a small (but vocal) contingent of the LEGO Star Wars community, Commander Cody (specifically in his Phase II armour from Revenge of the Sith, rather than his Phase I armour from The Clone Wars) represents a significant hole in the theme’s minifigure line-up. Ten years is a long time to leave that gap unplugged, so we’re making the wild prediction that Cody will finally arrive in some capacity in 2023 or 2024.

Not in a May the Fourth polybag, though, because he deserves to be way more widely available at this stage. Probability rating: 7/10

4 – A UCS Razor Crest

10 wild predictions for 10 more years of LEGO Star Wars sets

The LEGO Star Wars team has already begun dipping its Ultimate Collector Series toes in the waters beyond the original trilogy with 75309 Republic Gunship, and while the initial reception to that set was blemished by reactions to its minifigure line-up (and a few questionable quotes from the design team), it’s still a brilliantly-realised rendition of the Attack of the Clones ship – which hopefully means it’s selling pretty well. In turn, that will hopefully give the LEGO Group cause to continue exploring new avenues with its UCS line-up.

And given how many Mandalorian sets it’s already pumped out over the past couple of years, a UCS Razor Crest feels like a shoe-in at this point. A few vague rumours are currently circling over it launching in 2022, and while that doesn’t feel especially likely, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it happen eventually. Probability rating: 8/10

3 – More obscure Legends sets

10 wild predictions for 10 more years of LEGO Star Wars sets

Let’s be honest: predicting the totality of what the LEGO Group has planned for its Star Wars portfolio is pretty much impossible when it’s throwing out curveballs like 75342 Republic Fighter Tank.

Baffling in both its subject matter – a Legends vehicle that’s only ever appeared in video games and peripheral material – and its minifigure line-up, with three Clone Troopers pulled from a 2007 Hasbro action figure pack, it’s safe to say nobody saw it coming. These wildcard sets don’t come along very often, but they’re always a welcome surprise, keeping the LEGO Star Wars theme from getting stale and predictable. Here’s hoping for a few more in the next decade.

Probability rating: 5/10

2 – Fewer products

10 wild predictions for 10 more years of LEGO Star Wars sets

As saturated as the LEGO Star Wars portfolio feels right now, it’s actually been declining for the past couple of years, having peaked – at least as far as the total number of products is concerned – in 2018. According to the LEGO Star Wars team, that’s the result of a conscious decision to streamline its output. “We could see that there were some parts [of the assortment] that were maybe not the most popular, and were mainly just sitting on the shelf,” the theme’s Creative Lead Jens Kronvold Frederiksen told Brick Fanatics in 2021. “Now, we’ve focused [the assortment], and really think more about what are the best [sets].”

If that trend continues, we’re expecting to see the total number of LEGO Star Wars products continue to decline over the next 10 years, if only marginally – much to the relief of our wallets, and hopefully to the strength of the sets that do come our way. Quality over quantity, and so on. Probability rating: 8/10

1 – 10 more Millennium Falcons

10 wild predictions for 10 more years of LEGO Star Wars sets

2022 is the LEGO Star Wars theme’s 23rd year on shelves, and in that time the LEGO Group has launched no fewer than 21 different models of the Millennium Falcon, from microscale builds and keyrings all the way up to two Ultimate Collector Series sets.

You can in fact buy three different versions of Han Solo’s freighter simultaneously at LEGO.com right now, including 75295 Millennium Falcon Microfighter, 75257 Millennium Falcon and 75192 Millennium Falcon. We’re not expecting a third UCS rendition – it’s hard to see how the last one could be improved – but we are expecting to see at least a few more Falcons come out of the LEGO Star Wars line-up over the next decade. And we’ll probably get some more X-wings and Landspeeders, too.

Yeah, this probably isn’t the wildest prediction… Probability rating: 11/10 Support the work that Brick Fanatics does by purchasing your LEGO using our affiliate links.
